hi all, this is my first time posting in here, and I wasn't sure which sub-forum to use, so hopefully this is ok.
My partner and I have an 8 month old male mini lop named Dukes who we both absolutely adore. He's quite well behaved and is litter trained, and he is VERY affectionate, smothering both of us in kisses every time we give him a decent pat.
We used to have two little mini lops, we had a little black boy called Hersi - we used to leave the boys outside on our balcony when we went out (we're in a 2nd floor apartment), they had a hutch out there and we had some fake grass laid down for them to run around on. One evening we came home from a friends place and the boys had been on the balcony, but when we came home Hersi was gone :-(
We searched high and low for him, checking the garden underneath our balcony, checking everywhere inside, we basically turned the place upside down looking for him - but he had disappeared without a trace. Dukes seemed fine, although he was quite sad for a few weeks without his little friend. There was no clues at all as to what had happened to Hersi, everything looked just as we left it.
My question is - what do people think is the most logical explanation for Hersi's disappearance? Do people think he could have been taken by a predatory bird, such as the Powerful Owl, which is apparently increasingly common in urban areas on the Eastern seaboard?
There's really no way he could have jumped off the balcony, the fence/barrier is about 4 foot high. There's also very little chance someone could have scaled the balcony and taken him, as it is 20 odd feet high and there is really no way to climb up, let alone climb down holding a squirming rabbit.
The only possible explanation we can come up with is that he was taken by a large bird. I've done some research since and there are a couple of candidates, namely the Powerful Owl and the Sea Eagle (we are only about 100m from Parramatta River in Sydney).
I would be very interested to hear people's views on what they think happened to our little guy - we live in the inner west of Sydney and this occurred about 3 months ago. We are very happy with Dukes, and we don't let him outside at night anymore or during the daytime if we aren't home - but we still miss little Hersi terribly, he was our first rabbit and held a special place in our hearts :-(
PS when I figure out how I will upload a photo of Dukes, he is adorable!
