Rabbits are quite finicky creatures when it comes to the heat, so protecting them in the summer is very important. The purpose of this thread is to share our experiences with our rabbits in the more harsh weather. I will add dot points to this first post to make the information more accessable.
Heat
-When it is over 28 degrees celsius, a rabbit must be bought inside where it is cooler. Rabbits in the wild will retreat to burrows when it is very hot, when they are in hutches, they can not do this.
-Adding frozen water bottles help to keep bunnies cool
-Always ensure fresh water is available (preference for two water bottles and a water bowl)
-Feed fresh vegetable (vegetables provide extra moisture)
-Provide extra hay (hay helps to insulate)
-Put the enclosure in the shade of a tree
-Place cardboard over the hutch (the more layers the better, Cardboard is a great insulator)
Rain
-Ensure the hutch is on a raise flat area so as to avoid flooding
-Make sure there is an enclosed bedding area to escape the rain
-Cover the hutch with a tarp to ensure water is kept out
Cold
-Extra insulating hay
Input is desired and welcome!!
